Navigating the Tech Jungle: Why SMBs need Strategic consultations on their team

Heather Todd • August 23, 2023

In today's dynamic business environment, small and medium business owners often find themselves navigating multiple roles. One minute you're an accountant, the next you're dealing with HR, and the moment after, you're tinkering with the company's IT infrastructure. Sound familiar?

But here's the thing: as crucial as technology is for the modern business, the world of IT is a labyrinth of complexities, ever-evolving tools, and emerging trends. For the everyday business owner, it can be a rabbit warren! This is where the expertise of strategic IT consultants becomes invaluable.

Why?

In essence, consultants are like your tech-savvy mates who've seen it all. They know the landscape, understand your business needs, and more importantly, they can pinpoint where you should be investing and where you should be holding back.

They can be crucial in the following areas:

  • Cost efficiency: It might seem counter-intuitive to spend money on a consultant to save money, but think of them as a GPS for your IT journey. They help you navigate the vast terrain, ensuring you don’t end up at costly dead-ends or unnecessary detours.
  • Fresh Pair of Eyes: Sometimes, when you're knee-deep in the day-to-day running of your business, you might miss out on potential tech opportunities. Consultants come in with a fresh perspective and might spot opportunities you never knew existed.
  • Tailored Tech Solutions: Not every flashy tool out there is right for your business. Consultants evaluate your specific needs and recommend solutions that are tailored to your business model, ensuring you’re not just following the latest tech fads.

Maximising Investments

So, you’ve got some money put aside in your budget to level up your IT this year, how can a consultant help ensure you maximise your investment?

  • Risk Mitigation: Investing in the wrong technology can be a costly mistake. Strategic consultants help in identifying potential risks, ensuring you make informed decisions.
  • Training and Implementation: Once you've invested in a new IT solution, you need to make sure your team knows the ropes. Consultants can help with training, ensuring smooth implementation and faster adaptation.
  • Future-proofing: The tech world moves at a lightning pace. Consultants can guide you towards investments that won’t become obsolete in a blink, giving you a longer runway before needing an upgrade.

Are They Worth It?

So, the real question is, are consultants worth the investment for small and medium business owners? In most cases, absolutely! While there’s an initial cost involved, the long-term savings, both in terms of money and headaches, can make it well worth the spend.

To put it simply, think of strategic consultants as your compass in the sprawling tech wilderness. They won’t just help you find your way; they’ll ensure you enjoy the journey and make the most of it.

So, next time you're scratching your head over an IT conundrum, maybe give a thought to having a chat with one of them. Your future self might just thank you for it!

Data Privacy Day has been internationally observed on 28 January since 2007. Its purpose is to raise awareness and promote best privacy and data protection practices. It serves as an excellent reminder of exactly how precious our data is, as well as our ethical and legal obligations as businesses to securely manage and protect it. So, in terms of data privacy, how have we fared here in New Zealand? Why is data governance so important - what is it, and why exactly do you need it? Warning – triggering content: It may not be your job to manage data – and you may not think you even need to care about it. But if you are a stakeholder, it’s your responsibility to make sure that your business complies with New Zealand’s privacy and data protection best practices. This is a big topic (sorry!), so it’s in two parts.
